BACKGROUND

Regularity Rallies are based on the rallies of yester-year, whereby a rally crew pilot their car to arrive at an undisclosed destination at a precise time, meaning that the car needs to be kept exactly on time all the time, as per the speed, distance and time parameters laid out in the road book.

Regularity events have evolved over the years and nowadays these events are all tarmac events, using public roads. The demographic of the events has also changed to include both sighted and blind navigators.

The Italian Classic Challenge is held annually and forms part of the Regularity Car Rally calendar which is run by SARRA (South African Regularity Rally Association). ARCSA and FIAT Club Africa take turns to organise the Italian Classic Challenge each year and as 2020 is the 110th Anniversary of Alfa Romeo, ARCSA will be the organisers for this year’s event. In keeping with tradition, free entry is given to all Italian cars that enter. For all non Italian Marques the entry fee is R250-00 plus a one day event license for non SARRA members.

This year we have created a Novice / Touring class for first time entrants. Should they wish to see their amazing results on the score sheet at the end of the day they will have to rent a logger at the start of the event at a cost of R100-00.

We will also be joined by our blind navigators from BNRC (Blind Navigators Rally Club).

Blind Navigators Series is a unique sport that not only encourages blind participants but puts them in a position of control as the route schedules are all in Braille. So unlike other sports for the disabled, the Blind Navigators Series uses the unique skills learned by the blind navigator to empower them. A sighted navigator could not do what they do, unless he or she first learned to read Braille. Over recent years, the series has also opened up to include partially blind navigators. The re-introduction of a rally series for blind navigators came about at the beginning of 2005, thanks to the social-responsibility action at the time by Total SA (sadly no longer) and Lions International, together with SARRA. In addition to regular Club drivers, the Lions do provide drivers with their cars but are always looking for new drivers to take on the challenge.

This year’s event will start and finish at the quaint Bapsfontein Hotel and the route will be approximately 200 kms. A great family day out and loads of fun.
